Media Collections

The Media Collection includes popular circulating collections of over 7500 films on DVD and VHS, 6000 sound recordings on CD and cassette, and data on over 2000 DVD CD/-ROMs and diskettes. The Media collection and equipment is mainly housed on the North side of the first floor in the microfilm machine area.  Media can be checked out of the East and West circulation desks. The Library’s circulating collection of more than 12,000 LP sound recordings is located off site in the Library Annex. Patrons can request these LPs by completing an “Annex Request Form” linked to the catalog record for each recording.

The media collection is fully searchable through the online catalog. Use the advanced search form to enter keywords and limit by format. A cinema and media collections subject guide is available.


The JD Williams Library offers TV/VHS players for patron use. These are available on the North side of the first floor.

Audio Equipment:

Patrons can use the
Sony CD Burner to transfer tracks to CD from sound recordings on LP, cassette, and CD. They can also record to audiocassette from all sound recording formats.

Other audio equipment includes:

  • 2 LP Turntables – one connected to the Sony CD burner, the other to a cassette recorder
  • 1 Cassette to cassette player for recording
  • 2 Audio Tape/CD Combination Player
  • 2 portable cassette players that can be borrowed

The Circulation Desks also provide headphones for 3 hour in-library use.

Video Equipment:

  • 3 DVD/VHS/TV Combination Players
  • 1 DVD/TV Player
  • 4 Panasonic VHS/TV Combination Players
  • 1 3/4" U-matic/Beta Video Player
  • 3 Kodak Slide Projectors

In addition, patrons can use a movable 24” TV with DVD and VHS to accommodate small groups.

Faculty, staff and teaching assistants may place library media as well as personal copies of media items on reserve for class use at the West circulation desk. Please see Reserves for more information.
