For many people, the principles of sustainability (reduce, reuse, recycle) never even come to mind when making choices about fashion. Or, if sustainable fashion does come to mind, we think of ill-fitting, wrinkled, beige tunics made in gauzy organic cotton. The fashion industry does not have a reputation for being conscientious about environmental issues, but that has been changing! This article from Vogue magazine reports that designer Stella McCartney has been leading the charge since she started her label in 2000.

It's another presidential election year in 2016!  The candidates are already out there trying to get your attention. To help you be an informed voter, I've put together some nonpartisan sources of information on environmental issues and on the candidates' records on the environment.  I've pointed these links to their sections that talk about environmental issues but they all cover many other issues as well.

One of the easiest ways to understand the relationships we have with our natural environment is to examine the food we eat. Where does it come from, how is it grown, how is it processed and delivered? What are the environmental effects of our food choices? Many of these questions have been addressed in various ways by documentary film makers. I have compiled a list of popular titles in this genre available in our collection. Links to the library will take you to our DVD or streaming copy, links to IMDb will take you to information about commercial streaming sources, and links to the filmmakers' pages will tell you all about their ideas behind the films, some of which are quoted here.

Collections & Resources Spotlight : Influential Titles in the Modern Environmental  Movement.

Every once in awhile, I will use this space to talk about library resources related to the topics of sustainability or the enviornment. These may be print books or digital resources or whatever else I can come up with.

Today, the spotlight is on books that have had an impact on the public’s perception of environmental issues like toxins in the environment or climate change related to human activities. Links in the titles will take you to the library catalog records for each book.
